Illustration Friday: "Children"

Took this photo when I was in NY this Spring. I referenced colors from the photo to make the drawn children blend in.

Heres another drawing I did in the same style, last year, from a photo I took in Cologne, Germany... I think I should do a series...

LA Zoo

I got an annual pass to the LA Zoo and I'm putting it to use!

PS- Here are some articles on the pros and cons of zoos.

Cats of The Clan!

I'm doing a storyboard from a book of the series called Warriors: Cats of The Clan, by Erin Hunter. My little brother reads them and asked me to do a storyboard on the latest book he read. I told him I'd do a comic style page of storyboards for his birthday.

Ugh, I need a break from anatomically correct cat gestures, so I loosened up and sketched this one for myself.

If I'm the great big sister I aspire to be, I'll have his storyboard he's been begging for in the next week : )

Three sailor portaits

Here is a fun commission for a friend. He asked for portraits as gifts to friends, that would be similar to the sailor drawn by illustrator Bene Rohlmann. You can find it on his website http://pearpicker.de/drawings/digital/.

At his request, I kept the concept the same, but I did stay true to my own style. I like to blend my colors the way I learned to with gouache, which I think looks nice with digital rendering. As much as I love flat illustrations, I love to represent some level volume and depth, which I think you can see below. Anyway, it was a lot of fun, especially researching old photos of the Royal and US Navy, as well as sweet Sailor Jerry tattoos.

I ran a booth with some glitter happy, dressage prancing, crazy crafters: Unicornatopia. You guys are great! While I was there I got the chance meet some great artists. I had to visitlindsey olivares booth, and get a caricature. Thanks Lindsey, I love it!
